Last night, Tucker and I went to our first "Expecting Multiples" class at the UW Medical Center. I learned that:
- My babies have over a 90% chance of survival if born right now (28 weeks).
- If I can make it 4 more weeks (32 weeks, Nov 23rd) they have less than a 1% chance of having cerebral palsy and most likely won't have any long term developmental problems.
- If I can make if I can make it 8 more weeks (36 weeks, Dec 21st) they probably won't need any NICU time.
All of this feels so reassuring to me. We also discussed the number of people who will be in the OR when twins are delivered, and it can be as many as 14 people not counting us and the babies! Now that's a little crazy sounding, but I guess they will be prepared for just about anything. We are scheduled to take a hospital tour in about three weeks, so I'll find out more then.
We didn't learn a ton of relevant info last night because the topic was "birth". We will be having a c-section (which is scheduled for January 13th if I don't go into labor before then) because of my hip problems, so much of the lecture didn't apply to us. But it's always nice to be around lots of other folks in the same boat as you (i.e. having twins). Next week is Breastfeeding Multiples and I'm super pumped for that class. My goal is to breastfeed without supplementing for six month, but we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!
