  • Good-bye Honeymoon

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Anne asked what week I was in, and upon learning I was already in my 3rd trimester, she said my second trimester honeymoon was over. And boy was she right. I feel a little cheated though, because I only got about 4 good weeks of pregnancy. I really only enjoyed weeks 23-27. I didn't need sleep all the time, my zantac was working well, I got to feel the babies kicking a lot, etc.

But man, the last couple of weeks have started kicking my butt again! I'm completely exhausted (in fact I should be
napping right now and will as soon as I finish this post), my reflux is bad even with zantac, my feet are swollen, I pee a crazy number of times a day, my hip is starting to hurt more, I'm more clumsy than usual, and I'm starting to feel a little emotional about the babies coming and about life in general. A couple of weeks ago, I also failed my 1 hour glucose screening so I had to go back for the three hour fasting test. Luckily, I do not have gestational diabetes, but drinking 400 calories of pure sugar on an empty stomach was not fun.

Seven more weeks. I just want the boys to hang in there for seven more weeks. (Yesterday's belly pic added to the bottom.)

  • Classes

Last night, Tucker and I went to our first "Expecting Multiples" class at the UW Medical Center. I learned that:
    • My babies have over a 90% chance of survival if born right now (28 weeks).
    • If I can make it 4 more weeks (32 weeks, Nov 23rd) they have less than a 1% chance of having cerebral palsy and most likely won't have any long term developmental problems.
    • If I can make if I can make it 8 more weeks (36 weeks, Dec 21st) they probably won't need any NICU time.
All of this feels so reassuring to me. We also discussed the number of people who will be in the OR when twins are delivered, and it can be as many as 14 people not counting us and the babies! Now that's a little crazy sounding, but I guess they will be prepared for just about anything. We are scheduled to take a hospital tour in about three weeks, so I'll find out more then.

We didn't learn a ton of relevant info last night because the topic was "birth". We will be having a c-section (which is scheduled for January 13th if I don't go into labor before then) because of my hip problems, so much of the lecture didn't apply to us. But it's always nice to be around lots of other folks in the same boat as you (i.e. having twins). Next week is Breastfeeding Multiples and I'm super pumped for that class. My goal is to breastfeed without supplementing for six month, but we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

  • My Boys

I had another ultrasound yesterday to check on the growth of the twins. I feel them both moving/kicking all the time now, but it's so reassuring to get to see them. Both are a little over 2 pounds now and everything seems to be going good. Evan's heartbeat was 123 bpm and Aidan's was 125 bpm. Both boys now have their heads buried in my pelvis which may explain my excessive need to pee. My main concern was/is my cervical length because I know that is one factor that could put me on bed rest, which I really don't want. Eight weeks ago my cervix was 4.4 cm, and yesterday it was 3.3 cm. As far as I know, this is still at an ok length, and hopefully it'll hang in there until at least December 21st (36 weeks).

About Me

  • I'm a 29-years-old Seattlite and a special education teacher to 3rd-6th graders in a self-contained classroom for students with autism and cognitive deficits. I've been married for almost tenyears and have been TTC for about five. My husband and I have been blessed by a beautiful little girl through adoption. Katelynn Joy was born on December 21, 2007 and came home with us on February 9th, 2008! We decided to pursue IVF for our second child, and low and behold, we are having twins due Jan '10.
